Inner Peace - Making it your priority

How are we supposed to make inner peace “priority one” when everything else is getting in the way?

Things such as work, family and finances demand so much of our time it seems there is nothing left for focusing on our-self and our inner peace.

Most of us don’t have time to go and meditate in a temple or to fast for forty days in the wilderness until we achieve enlightenment. We can’t just get up and leave the family, our work and finance behind and run off to Thailand for six months of contemplation.

We could switch off the TV, stay home instead of going out, go to bed earlier and meditate, take a walk and find some trees to sit amongst or have a long bath. I will give you my suggested method of meditation for which I have no name. You can just call it “meditation” which means “to ponder”. It is simply stopping, looking, listening and feeling. You can get great energy from this and you can really use it to heal your body, mind, and emotions of stress and disease.

All things change/transform and this is the greatest secret to survival. Just how much you can change/transform is entirely your choice. The only real limitations are those imposed by your own beliefs. Let them drop aside for a short while and you will discover there are no boundaries. Make like a caterpillar and you will morph beyond your imaginings.

Inner peace is the first priority and how much time you devote to this is your call, but I would recommend anything between half an hour and 2 hours a day. You will probably need to start with 20 minutes and work up to it in half-hour blocks. If you truly make the commitment to yourself, you may be surprised at how much time you can actually find.

Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, emphasizes the importance of inner peace in the world: “The question of real, lasting world peace concerns human beings, so basic human feelings are also at its roots. Through inner peace, genuine world peace can be achieved. In this the importance of individual responsibility is quite clear; an atmosphere of peace must first be created within ourselves, then gradually expanded to include our families, our communities, and ultimately the whole planet.”

It is interesting how the Dalai Lama suggests inner peace must first be created within ourselves and then expanded out into the world. Just like the caterpillar goes into the chrysalis, we must go within and find what is going on deep within ourselves before we can move on and take the next step.

Inner peace is not dependent on the outer world. It is something we create within ourselves by connecting with our highest truth and listening to our inner guidance. We are often far too preoccupied in our outer worlds and don’t spend enough time checking our level of inner peace. As our number one priority, we must take the time to clear away the disturbances that interfere with inner peace.

Remember: “Peace of mind, serenity, and calmness are descriptions of a disposition free from the effects of stress”.

I ask you to take some time for yourself every day to stop, look, listen and feel. Look inward at you and shut the mental chatter out.

Inner peace

Look for simplicity and clarity.
